Celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week in Tampa, Florida, through community, reflection, and support for breastfeeding families.
At The Nest, we believe every family deserves to feel supported, seen, and celebrated throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. This August, we were honored to celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week by creating a welcoming space for connection, reflection, and community care here in Tampa, Florida.
Inspired by the 2026 theme, “We All We Got,” our gathering was a reminder that supporting breastfeeding families means more than sharing information. It means creating spaces where parents feel welcomed, where their stories matter, and where community can show up in meaningful ways.
Black Breastfeeding Week takes place annually from August 25–31 and highlights the experiences of Black breastfeeding families, the importance of culturally responsive lactation support, and the community efforts working to address disparities in maternal and infant health.
A Celebration Rooted in Community
Our Black Breastfeeding Week gathering was designed to nurture the whole person—not just celebrate breastfeeding, but honor the people, relationships, and moments that make the journey meaningful.
Throughout the event, families had opportunities to connect, slow down, and enjoy a space created with care and intention.

Celebrating the Beauty of Breastfeeding
One of the most meaningful parts of the celebration was making space to capture the beauty of breastfeeding through complimentary mini breastfeeding photo sessions.
Breastfeeding journeys deserve to be documented and celebrated in all their forms. These photographs offered families an opportunity to preserve a meaningful season of life while helping normalize breastfeeding as part of the everyday experiences of families in our community.
Representation matters. When families see themselves reflected in breastfeeding education, images, and support spaces, it can help foster belonging and remind parents that their experiences deserve to be valued.
Why Black Breastfeeding Week Matters
Black Breastfeeding Week creates intentional space to celebrate Black families while acknowledging the inequities that continue to affect access to breastfeeding support and maternal health care.
Its work helps bring attention to barriers such as unequal access to lactation services, gaps in representation within the lactation workforce, and the need for culturally responsive care.
Celebrating breastfeeding is important, but celebration alone is not enough. Families also need access to knowledgeable providers, supportive workplaces, welcoming health care environments, and communities that respect their feeding goals.
We believe this work must continue beyond one week in August. Every family deserves compassionate, evidence-informed support without having to navigate unnecessary barriers to receive it.

The Village Makes a Difference
The 2026 theme, “We All We Got,” beautifully reflects what we hope to cultivate at The Nest: a community where families do not have to navigate pregnancy, feeding, and postpartum life alone.
Sometimes support looks like a lactation consultation. Sometimes it looks like a listening ear, a nourishing meal, a moment of rest, or a photograph that captures a memory a family will cherish for years.
And sometimes, it simply means being in a room where you feel understood.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us, helped bring this gathering to life, and contributed to an atmosphere of warmth and connection. Thank you for reminding us that community care is not just something we talk about—it is something we practice together.
